The latest innovation at Victoria Baths, Manchester - a therapeutic jacuzzi - leaves our reporter feeling a little strange

The bright waiting-room, with its walls bare of credentials and weighty volumes, might belong to one of those handsome “quacks” (so dear to the hearts of novel-readers) who stroke their thinning hair and flatter you into feeling better.

Here, however, only a “tonic for the jaded” is promised and a jolly assistant does the talking, what little there is. Following instructions, you undress and step down a ladder into a tank full of hot water; there you sit on a seat with only your head out while an unseen masseur with a thousand hands pats and lightly pummels you for twenty minutes. The masseur never appears, and outside you look at the notice-board to make a note of his foreign-sounding name: “Aeratone Therapeutic Bath (by appointment only).”
